I'm a native Spanish teacher from Barranquilla, Colombia. I live in Medellín. And I've spent the last 2 years teaching students from every corner of the world how to actually speak Spanish, not just study it.

Duolingo and YouTube are great places to start. I actually encourage you to use them alongside my classes. They help you reinforce what you hear and learn in our sessions together.
But that's not how our brains actually retain a language. We retain through association. Through real moments, real people, real reactions. When you have an actual conversation and someone laughs at your joke in Spanish, that moment sticks. An app can't give you that. I can.
It didn't work because you were studying, not speaking. Most language learning puts grammar first and conversation last. I flip that.
